Last week 90 of them, minus those the V&A just had to have, went up for auction at the Brick Lane Music Hall in the East End of London, La Rue made his last appearance in a frock there in 2007.

Bidders came from all over to get their hands on these spectacular costumes, from Japan and New Zealand as well as America, all competing for the one-of-a-kind ensembles.

Danny La Rue passed away last June, he was noted as the best-paid entertainer in Britain owning hotels, driving Rolls-Royce’s and running a Mayfair nightclub frequented by the likes of Grace Kelly and Elizabeth Taylor.

La Rue’s closest companion was his loyal dresser and costume designer, Annie Galbraith to whom he left all of the costumes, “That’ll be your pension when I’m gone,” he had told her.

The auctioned raised more than £40,000 for lucky Annie Glabraith.
